Tanzania: Etisalat for Best Mobile Innovation Global Awards

Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSMA) has shortlisted Etisalat Group for the 2012 Best Mobile Health Innovation Awards at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain at the end of the month.

The Etisalat's Group Senior Vice President Commercial and Zantel's Chief Commercial Officer Ahmed Mokhles said mobile health (mhealth) has the potential to transform and better health services in all its operations in the Middle East, Asia and Africa including Tanzania. "By providing decision support tools to
frontline health workers combined with Etisalat's extensive telecommunications portfolio, we can assist governments to extend the reach of the health system into the communities where people live," Said Mokhles.

He said the success of mhealth is through the fact that it has effectively removed the geographical barriers between healthcare providers and patients since they can easily communicate via the mobile phones. He added that Etisalat's M-Commerce service was nominated as a second Tanzanian initiative by GSMA awards as well in the category - The best Mobile Money Innovation".

In 2011, Etisalat introduced and is continuing the commercial roll-out of fully Mobile Commerce network across its Operations.Following recent successes in Tanzania, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Etisalat enables end-users to use mobile phones as a payment instrument anywhere, anytime without geographical borders in highly secured environment.

Etisalat was nominated in the category "The Best Network Product or Solution for Serving Customers" for recent launch of DotMe service in Nigeria. The rapid penetration of mobile phones in the country has necessitated the need to use advanced technology to provide and support the health fraternity being one of the major concerns in Tanzania today.
