Following the desire of many Nigerians to be enlightened on the new cashless policy, BusinessWorld newspaper, with the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), would be organizing a 3-Day Cash-Less Lagos Fair at LTV Event Centre, Agidingbi, Lagos, May 9-11, 2012.
The fair with the theme: ‘Bringing Alternative Payment Options to the Touch and Feel of Consumers’, will afford banks, card companies, telecom companies, Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems and providers of alternative payment options opportunity to interact with consumers.
Clearly, the challenge for the cash-less policy is not paucity of alternative payment options any more, but getting the public to be acquainted with these options and embrace them too. This challenge will be resolved if the barrier between the banks and other alternative payment providers and the general public is broken at the take-off stage of the policy.
The Cash-less Lagos Fair will break the barrier by providing neutral ground for the banks and other alternative payment solution providers and the general public to meet. It will afford the banks and all the alternative payment solution providers the opportunity to showcase and demonstrate their products\services in the full glare of the general public.
The fair would be very helpful to participating companies who would receive instant feedback from the general public, based on what they see and touch about the products and services. The public would be better informed after the fair because they would get all the answers to questions agitating their minds and then make way for them to embrace these products and services. On the part of the CBN, the fair would be a wonderful opportunity for it to sell the cash-less policy directly to the public.
The CBN’s cash-less policy is basically about reducing drastically the level of cash transactions in the country and gravitating towards alternative payment modes that make commercial transactions convenient while reducing the risk of carrying cash. Banks operating in the country keying into the cash-less initiative are rolling out several alternative payment options. Telecom firms and the various e- payment companies are not left; they are rolling out payment options at an incredible speed. The CBN/BusinessWorld alliance captures the mood of the moment in the new financial intermediation process and explains the ulterior strategies of the newspaper in complementing the rolls of regulatory institutions in redefining the new trends in the economy. There is the expectation that a good number of Nigerians will benefit from this workshop as it will endeavour to bring all the major players under one roof.
